Dans les annales du hockey, on retient souvent les noms des grands marqueurs et des superstars. Mais l'histoire de Travis Gawryletz est un rappel puissant que les championnats se gagnent avec une équipe complète, où chaque maillon de la chaîne est essentiel. Bien que sa carrière dans la LHSBA fut courte et ses statistiques modestes, il se retire avec un honneur que beaucoup de grands joueurs n'obtiendront jamais : le titre de champion de la Coupe Calder.

Gawryletz était l'archétype du joueur de profondeur, le septième défenseur fiable sur lequel un entraîneur sait qu'il peut compter en cas de besoin. Son travail ne consistait pas à amasser les points, mais à être prêt, à pousser ses coéquipiers à l'entraînement et à répondre présent lorsqu'on faisait appel à lui. En 18 matchs répartis sur deux saisons, il a rempli son rôle avec professionnalisme.

Son heure de gloire est survenue lors de la saison 2011-12. Il faisait partie de l'organisation des Worcester Sharks qui, au terme d'un long parcours en séries, a soulevé la Coupe Calder. Même s'il n'a pas disputé de match lors de cette course au titre, sa présence au sein du groupe et son travail tout au long de la saison ont contribué à l'effort collectif qui mène à la victoire.

Après une dernière partie jouée en 2012-13, il a tiré sa révérence, discrètement, à l'image de la carrière qu'il a menée. Il ne laissera pas le souvenir d'un joueur flamboyant, mais celui, tout aussi important, d'un coéquipier qui a atteint le sommet. Son nom est associé à une équipe championne, et c'est là sa plus grande et plus belle réussite.
