Le 16 mai 2015, Curtis Sanford a mis un terme à sa carrière, laissant derrière lui le souvenir d'un gardien de but qui a atteint le sommet de son sport au niveau farm et dont la valeur dépassait largement ses statistiques.

La carrière de Curtis Sanford est à jamais définie par sa saison de rêve en 2011-12. Cette année-là, il a été la pierre angulaire des Worcester Sharks, les menant à la conquête de la '''Coupe Calder.''' Sa performance fut tout simplement dominante : il a maintenu une fiche spectaculaire de '''36-4-4''' en saison régulière, avant d'enchaîner avec '''14 victoires''', une moyenne de buts alloués de 2.89 et un pourcentage d'arrêts de .917 en séries éliminatoires. Il a été le leader incontesté d'une équipe championne.

Reconnu comme un meneur exceptionnel (LD 99) et un vétéran aguerri (EX 96), sa valeur était immense aux yeux des dirigeants de la ligue. Même si son parcours s'est déroulé au niveau farm, il a signé deux contrats majeurs dignes d'un gardien de premier plan : un pacte de deux ans d'une valeur de 2,3 millions de dollars avec les Sabres, suivi d'un contrat de trois ans de 2,1 millions de dollars avec les Blues.

Ces ententes lucratives témoignent de la confiance que les organisations plaçaient en sa capacité à encadrer une équipe et à performer sous pression. Impliqué dans plusieurs transactions, il était un actif convoité jusqu'à la fin de sa carrière.

Curtis Sanford se retire en tant que champion. Son nom est gravé sur la Coupe Calder et son parcours est un exemple éclatant de leadership et d'excellence dans le hockey professionnel.
